David Hockney is one of the most respected artists of his generation and is well known for his paintings, prints and portraits. But he’s also earned the reputation as a set designer for some of the world’s leading opera companies. Restaurant design is not unlike a theatrical setting. Both are spaces which are the backdrop to a performer or to a guest arriving at a popular eatery. The current interior design of the roof top eateries at OXO Tower in London pays homage to the evening’s blue sunset and nightfall. According to Shaun Clarkson ID, the restaurant’s designer, the blue lines create the feel of a classic cruise liner out to sea.
The OXO Tower is an outstanding piece of Art Deco architecture. Built in the late 1920s by architect Albert Moore, the building was threatened with demolition but saved in 1986. It now has housing, shops and art galleries as well as the popular rooftop restaurant operated by Harvey Nichols department store.
