Solo Exhibition March 18 – April 15, 2016
On March 18, Johniene Papandreas present pieces from her body of work at Gallery Lazarro in Palm Desert, Calif. The show will feature four distinctive series: Fixation, a series focusing on human expression; Botanica, in which the artist explores what she calls “the secret life of plants — lush, mysterious, and sensual things that are happening in nature, in the dark, in the undergrowth, that we’re not even aware of”; Body Language, a series designed to elicit a visceral rather than emotional response from the viewer; and a fourth series the artist says is yet to be categorized.
The show, called “A Space Between Breaths,” explores the unsaid and the unseen, much of which was inspired by Johniene’s career in theater and corporate design. “In theater, it’s not so much about what’s happening on the stage as about what has happened, what will happen, and what is happening off stage,” she says. “It’s all about subtext. And it’s the same with my paintings. Like Miles Davis says, ‘You play the notes between the notes.’ And that’s what I’m trying to do. It’s about freezing those fleeting micro-expressions that you don’t see, but you sense.”
A fascination with subtext- with reading between the lines– tuning in to the unspoken…
